blue-star-fern-xxl
Blue Star Fern

The Blue Star Fern is the fern for people who think they don't like ferns. No fuss, no fine fronds that brown at the edges — instead, broad, deeply lobed leaves in a silver-blue you don't see anywhere else in a room, spilling from a hanging pot like a great blue-green cloud.

This is the XXL grade, which almost never reaches the UK: a full-grown specimen around 80cm across in a 37cm hanging pot, with the furry golden rhizomes — the reason it's also called the Golden Polypody — creeping over the rim. Hang it in a stairwell, a bathroom, a kitchen window, or set it high on a shelf and let it pour.

Easier than any other fern we sell, and completely safe for cats and dogs.

Best space & place

Medium to bright, indirect light — a few feet back from a window is ideal; no harsh direct sun, which fades the blue. Bathrooms and kitchens suit it, but unlike most ferns it copes with ordinary room humidity. Comfortable at 16–24°C; keep above 12°C.

When to water & feed

Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, and water the soil rather than the rhizomes, which rot if kept wet. It will forgive a missed watering far more readily than a soggy pot. Feed monthly at half strength through spring and summer; none in winter.

Need to know

The rhizomes creeping over the pot edge are healthy — don't bury them. The waxy blue bloom on the leaves rubs off, so handle by the pot and avoid leaf-shine products. Older fronds yellow and drop naturally from the base; new ones unfurl from the rhizomes.

Decorative pots not included. The plant will be delivered in a plastic hanging nursery pot.
