queensland-bottle-tree-one-off-specimen
Queensland Bottle Tree

Brachychiton rupestris, the Queensland Bottle Tree — a three-metre specimen with the swollen, water-storing trunk that gives it its name and a broad canopy of narrow, glossy leaves spreading to around 80cm. One of the most sculptural trees we can offer indoors, and one of the toughest: it evolved in the dry Australian interior and shrugs off the neglect that finishes most houseplants. A single piece, as photographed.

Best space & place

As much light as you can give it — a south or west-facing room, a glazed atrium, a bright reception or the sunniest corner of a large living space. It wants ceiling height (three metres plus) and room for the canopy to sit without touching walls. Keep it out of cold draughts; it is happy warm and dry.

When to water & feed

Sparingly. The trunk stores water, so let the soil dry out properly between drinks — roughly every two to three weeks in summer and less in winter. Overwatering is the only way to upset it. Feed lightly in spring and summer only.

Need to know

It may shed some leaves as it settles into a new home, particularly in winter; this is normal and it refills in spring.
