Sambucus is the showman of plants. If its almost black foliage weren't enough of a showpiece, its pink-flushed blooms in early summer dazzle, followed by red-black elderberries (edible), before its leaves transform to a rich red in autumn.
As a part of the common elder family, like elderflower, its small black fruit can also be used to make a refreshing summer drink.
For best results, grow Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ in moist but well drained soil in full sun to partial shade. However, it will tolerate waterlogged or very chalky ground.
