Pachira Aquatica, Money Tree - Plant Drop

Pachira Aquatica, Money Tree

The Pachira aquatica, also known as the money tree, is a popular houseplant known for its resilience and low-maintenance needs. Here’s a guide to keeping it healthy and thriving:

1. Light

  • Place your Pachira aquatica in bright, indirect light. It can handle lower light but grows best with moderate light exposure. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.

2. Watering

  • Water thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure it’s in well-draining soil. In winter, reduce the frequency of watering.
  • A common guideline is to water about once a week in warmer months and less in cooler ones, depending on your indoor conditions.

3. Humidity

  • This plant enjoys moderate to high humidity. Mist the leaves occasionally, especially in winter when indoor air tends to be dry. Alternatively, placing the pot on a tray with pebbles and water can boost humidity around the plant.

4. Temperature

  • Keep the Pachira aquatica in a temperature range between 15–24°C. It can tolerate cooler temperatures but should be kept above 10°C to prevent stress.

5. Fertilising

  • Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every month during spring and summer. Avoid fertilising in autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.

6. Soil

  • Use well-draining potting soil, such as a peat-based mix. A soil blend designed for succulents or cacti works well, as it helps prevent waterlogging.

7. Pruning and Maintenance

  • Prune as needed to maintain shape and remove any yellow or damaged leaves. Pruning also encourages bushier growth.
  • Pachira aquatica can grow quickly; if it becomes too large, repot it into a larger container during the growing season (spring or early summer).

8. Pest Management

  • Although fairly resistant, it may occasionally attract pests like spider mites or mealybugs. Inspect it regularly and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if pests appear.
