Polyscias Fabian, Shade Aralia

Polyscias Fabian, Shade Aralia

Polyscias Fabian, commonly known as Shade Aralia, is a beautiful, bushy plant with glossy, rounded leaves. It adds a touch of elegance to any indoor space, and with the right care, it thrives as a houseplant.

1. Light Requirements

  • Low to Moderate Light: This plant thrives in moderate, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. However, avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

2. Watering

  • Moderate Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Reduce watering in the winter months, but do not let the soil dry out completely. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

3. Humidity

  • Medium to High Humidity: Polyscias Fabian enjoys a humid environment, making it perfect for bathrooms or kitchens. If the air in your home is dry, mist the plant occasionally or place it on a pebble tray with water to maintain humidity levels.

4. Temperature

  • Ideal Temperature Range: Keep the plant in temperatures between 16°C to 24°C. Avoid exposing it to cold drafts or temperatures below 13°C.

5. Soil

  • Well-Draining Soil: A rich, well-draining potting mix is ideal for Polyscias Fabian. A mixture of regular houseplant soil with added perlite or sand works well to prevent water-logging.

6. Fertilising

  • Monthly Feeding During Growing Season: Feed the plant once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months when the plant's growth slows down.

7. Pruning

  • Occasional Pruning: Trim back leggy growth to maintain a compact and bushy shape. Pruning also encourages new growth and keeps the plant looking tidy.

8. Repotting

  • Repot Every 2–3 Years: Repot Polyscias Fabian every couple of years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the previous one to allow for root expansion.

9. Pests and Diseases

  • Common Pests: Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. If detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Diseases: Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the plant is not sitting in waterlogged soil.

10. Toxicity

  • Toxic to Pets: Polyscias Fabian is mildly toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
