Trachycarpus Fortunei are majestic specimens which can grow up to 15 meters tall. They are perfectly suited to urban planting schemes as they cope well with pollution and benefit from the extra warmth of a city.
They are very drought tolerant and easy going so work well in a low maintenance scheme or in water conscious gardens.
Mature specimens can flower with sprays of small, light yellow flowers.
Best space & place
Grow Trachycarpus fortunei in full sun to dappled shade in a sheltered spot out of prevailing winds which can damage leaves.
When to water & feed
Grow in moist but well-drained, fertile soil. Reduce watering in winter months. They need very little care when planted in the ground and established.
Need to know
Trachycarpus are frost hardy but may need winter protection in prolonged periods of cold weather. Wrap the plant with hessian or horticultural fleece.
Height: 130-150cm
For no fuss or mess you can put the plant in the growing pot it arrives in straight inside a decorative one. This also allows allows excess water to be drained after watering.
For a good fit the opening (not diameter) and height of the new decorative pot need to be several centimetres greater than the current growing pot.
Remember to take into account tapering, as the internal height of a pot will be measured from the centre to the top but the sides will taper in on a rounded pot.
