For no fuss or mess you can place the plant in its growing pot (the pot it arrives in) inside a decorative one. This allows allows excess water to be drained after watering.

For a good fit the opening (not diameter) and height of the new decorative pot need to be several centimetres greater than the current growing pot. Here is how we measure and list pot sizes:

Remember to take into account tapering, as the internal height of a pot will be measured from the centre to the top but the sides will taper in a rounded pot.

We recommend using a liner to protect your decorative pot and prevent leaking (whether placing the nursery pot inside or repotting directly into the decorative pot).

Light Conditions

Bright Indirect Light

Watering

Water when the top 2–5 cm of soil feels dry. This usually translates to watering once a week in summer, but less frequently in winter.

Temperature

Optimal temperature of 18-24°C. Minimum 10°C.

Feeding

Use a houseplant feed in the growing season (spring and summer)

Top Tip

Leaves tear naturally so don't be concerned. Keep them looking luscious by misting.

Strelitzia Nicolai

Giant White Bird of Paradise

Its grand size gives it the name 'Giant White Bird Of Paradise', as it can grow to great heights (up to 16 feet!) , but the grace and understated grandeur of its sinuous shape is what makes it such a compelling house plant (it can have a summer holiday outdoors but won't survive our worst winters).

The leaves alone are large and exotic looking, but when in flower, sadly seldom seen outside of the wild, it opens wide like a great white Crane.

Also known commonly as the Wild Banana, as it is a species of banana-like plants, of which there is the orange flowering variety Reginae which we also stock for its silvery more upright leaves. Either give stature, shape and form to any room.

Please note that Strelitzia leaves naturally split, it is how the plant evolved to deal with winds.

Need to know

Happiest situated in indirect bright light. It is happy in most rooms, with a minimum temperature of 10°C. It can be acclimatised to live in direct sun, but leaves will scorch while it adjusts.

In the summer months Strelitzia require their soil to remain moist to keep the leaves looking good. Just make sure the soil drains well and they don't sit in water. Feeding is beneficial.

Strelitzia need humidity to thrive, it is important to increase humidity by misting, and introducing fresh airflow.
