Tender climber with flowers that have an exotic spicy fragrance with a hint of vanilla. The flowers are in a deep burgundy.
These climbers can eventually reach 8-12 metres in 5-10 years.
Best space & place
The Akebia are happy in full sun and partial shade. If in an exposed position they will lose their leaves in winter, but are hardy down to -15.
When to water & feed
They like to be planted in moist but well-draining soil.
Need to know
They need warmth to be fully evergreen, otherwise they will lose their leaves in winter, but are very hardy and will come back to life in Spring.
For no fuss or mess you can put the plant in the growing pot it arrives in straight inside a decorative one. This also allows allows excess water to be drained after watering.
For a good fit the opening (not diameter) and height of the new decorative pot need to be several centimetres greater than the current growing pot.
Remember to take into account tapering, as the internal height of a pot will be measured from the centre to the top but the sides will taper in on a rounded pot.
