Planting for Kwãnt in Mayfair — the first London bar from Erik Lorincz, regularly named the world's best bartender. A room of old-world charm and modern revival: hand-painted Polynesian tapa art, retro furnishings, and a menu built on vintage cocktails.
Specified to the blinds
A bar is a difficult light problem, because the light is never the same twice. It is bright and directional at midday with the blinds up, and almost nothing at nine in the evening. Most planting schemes are specified for one of those conditions and quietly fail in the other.
The feature pair are Manila palms, set symmetrically against the columns. They want dappled light rather than full sun, which is exactly what the blinds produce — so rather than working around the window treatment, the planting was chosen to suit it.
Palms, all the way down
Palms carry the whole scheme, which suits a bar built on the idea of somewhere far away. They also happen to be the family that copes best with interior light, which is the sort of coincidence you take when you find it.
Where the room drops into genuinely low light — the corners a bar spends its evening in — kentia palms and lady palms take over. Both hold their form for years in conditions that would thin most things out. Fig trees and birds of paradise fill out the middle of the range.
