Orangery Plants

Glass, light, and plants too magnificent for the weather outside — citrus, palms and giant strelitzia for orangeries, conservatories and garden rooms.

The orangery was invented for exactly this: glass, light, and plants too magnificent for the weather outside. Citrus first — it's in the name — then palms, giant strelitzias and architectural specimens that turn a glazed room into the most alive space in the house.

Conservatories and orangeries offer what almost no other room can: real, direct light in quantity. That's why the plants here run larger and more dramatic than anything we'd suggest for a sitting room — a fruiting lemon tree, a banana with genuine scale, birds of paradise that flower properly given a bright year.

Two things to know about glazed rooms: they run hot in summer — ventilation and a little midday shading keep leaves from scorching — and plants there drink faster than houseplants elsewhere, so check the soil weekly in the growing season. Winter is the reverse: cooler and slower, water sparingly. Every plant ships with its printed care guide, and our horticulturalists are on hand for life.
