Chosen by Hand: The Grower Behind Our Bonsai

A trip to Japan, two loves, and a lifetime of handpicking trees. The story of the grower behind every Plant Drop bonsai.

Some trees are grown. Others are made, slowly, by hand, over a lifetime. Our bonsai belong to the second kind, and every one of them comes to us through a single grower whose story is as unusual as the trees themselves.

Tucked away in the Dutch countryside, their nursery is home to rows of old pines, yews, hollies and maples that most people only ever see in photographs of Kyoto gardens. How they got there begins with a journey that was only ever meant to be about plants.

A journey to Japan

Years ago, a Dutch grower travelled to Japan to see its gardens and nurseries for himself. He went for the trees. He came home having fallen in love twice: with a woman he met there, and with the old garden trees of Japan.

Both loves stayed. The connection to Japan became the heart of the nursery, and the trees he first saw on that trip became the trees he has spent his working life bringing back.

Chosen by hand, every year

Nothing is ordered from a catalogue. Every year the grower travels back to Asia, to nurseries in Japan and Indonesia, and walks the rows to choose each tree in person.

He looks at the things no photograph can show: how the trunk moves, how the bark has plated with age, how the branches have been built pad by pad over decades. Only the trees that pass that test make the journey to Europe, and that small selection is where every Plant Drop bonsai comes from.

Why these trees are different

A true bonsai is not just a small tree in a pot. It is a tree that has been grown for decades and shaped by hand every year, so that it carries the look of age: a thick, characterful trunk, branches built pad by pad, and a form that feels both old and calm.

That work cannot be hurried. From the heavy, plated trunks of our Japanese white pines to the sculpted forms of our indoor trees, what you are buying is years of patient pruning by skilled hands. You can buy a young tree and start the process yourself. You cannot buy back the time.

From their nursery to your home

We work with this grower because we share the same belief: a tree like this should be chosen, not mass-produced. Every bonsai we sell, indoor or outdoor, has been picked by hand in Asia before it ever reaches us.

Our largest and oldest specimens sit in our Originals, one-off pieces you won't find twice. The Japanese white pines are sourced to order: tell us what you're looking for and we'll send photos of the trees in the current selection, so you can choose the exact one that comes to you. Each is delivered and placed by our own team, with lifetime horticultural advice from our experts.

If a tree catches your eye, enquire on its page and we'll take it from there. Or browse the full bonsai collection.
