Will it fit? A two-minute check
  • The route in. Standard UK internal doors give a clear opening of about 72cm. The nursery pot is the widest rigid part — its diameter is listed above for each size — and we bring tall plants through on their side, so height is rarely the problem, but tight hallways, stair turns and lift doors are. Measure the narrowest point between your front door and where the plant will stand.
  • Ceiling. Measure to your lowest obstruction — a beam, pendant or ceiling fan — not the ceiling itself. Add 10–15cm to the listed plant height for the decorative pot. Keep 30cm from fan blades or low lights.
  • Footprint. Allow the full spread listed above. Leaves can be turned to the wall for a while but not held there without damage.
  • Not sure? Send a photo and rough measurements to projects@plantdrop.co.uk and we’ll tell you which size.

How To Pair A Decorative Pot

For no fuss or mess you can place the plant in its growing pot (the pot it arrives in) inside a decorative one. This allows excess water to be drained after watering.

For a good fit the opening (not diameter) and height of the new decorative pot need to be several centimetres greater than the current growing pot. Here is how we measure and list pot sizes:

Remember to take into account tapering, as the internal height of a pot will be measured from the centre to the top but the sides will taper in a rounded pot.

We recommend using a liner to protect your decorative pot and prevent leaking (whether placing the nursery pot inside or repotting directly into the decorative pot).

An outdoor tree

Japanese pines live outside all year round. They need full sun, open air and the winter cold to stay healthy, and will decline quickly if kept indoors.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the surface of the soil starts to dry, more often in summer and much less in winter. Never let the pot sit in standing water.

Shaping

The form has been built over decades. We recommend an annual visit from our team to manage the new growth (the 'candles') in late spring and keep the shape refined.

Every tree comes with lifetime horticultural advice from our team.

Most orders arrive within two weeks. We'll arrange your delivery and confirm the day in advance.

Pinus Parviflora

Japanese White Pine, One-Off Specimens

Few trees carry time the way an old Japanese pine does. Every layered pad, every plate of bark is the result of decades of patient shaping in the gardens and nurseries of Japan.

These white pines are estimated at 50+ years old, and no two are alike. We source each one to order, so you choose the exact tree from photos of the current selection before it comes to you.

Each tree is a one-off. Enquire and we'll send photos of the current selection so you can choose yours.

Japanese white pines (Pinus parviflora), field-grown and shaped in Japan over many decades. Estimated 50+ years old, with heavy, plated trunks, broad root flares and layered pads of soft, blue-green needles. Like most Japanese garden pines, they are grafted onto black pine roots for strength and vigour.

Trees of this age and character take a lifetime to make and rarely leave Japan. Each is sourced to order from a specialist importer of Japanese garden trees.

An outdoor tree for a sunny, open spot where it can be seen from inside: a terrace, a courtyard or the end of a garden view. It will not survive indoors.

Delivery and placement by our own team.
