Geting the right light
The way to ensure a plant will thrive in its new home is the get the right light. Plants can tolerate less than ideal conditions but over time this will lead to stunted growth, leaf drop or pest issues.

Low Light
The cast iron plant has evolved to survive in low light environments so is a good example of a low light shade plant.
Bright Indirect Light
This Alocasia plant is receiving light from a natural source (i.e. window or glazed door), but it is not right against a window, protecting it from leaf scorch.
Direct Sun / Bright Light
This cactus thrives in direct sunlight so it is positioned as close to the window as possible. Plants that like bright indirect light like to be placed as close to a window as possible - they might just experience some leaf scorch in south and west-facing windows in summer.
